The scale of devastation is enormous,&#8221; the IFRC&#8217;s Jamie LeSueur said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Almost everything is destroyed. Communication lines have been completely cut and roads have been destroyed. Photo courtesy   <br>standardmedia.co.ke  <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Sofala Province governor Alberto Mondlane warned that the &#8220;biggest threat we have now, even bigger than the cyclone, is floods because it&#8217;s raining more and more&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>&#8216;A PERFECT STORM&#8217;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Emma Beaty, coordinator of a grouping of NGOs known as Cosaco, said: &#8220;We&#8217;ve never had something of this magnitude before in Mozambique&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Some dams have broken, and others have reached full capacity, they&#8217;ll very soon open the flood gates. It&#8217;s a convergence of flooding, cyclones, dams breaking and making a potential wave: everything&#8217;s in place so we get a perfect storm.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nyusi said the Pungwe and Buzi rivers in central Mozambique &#8220;have burst their banks and engulfed entire villages.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Communities are isolated and bodies are floating&#8221; on the waters, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beira international airport was closed because of cyclone damage but later reopened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>ZIMBABWE HIT BY CYCLONE<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In neighbouring Zimbabwe, Idai left 98 dead and at least 217 more missing, according to the Information ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Families started burying their dead on Monday in damp graves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The storm swept away homes and ripped bridges to pieces, leaving destruction that the acting defence minister, Perrance Shiri, said &#8220;resembles the aftermath of a full-scale war&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some roads were swallowed up by massive sinkholes, while bridges were ripped to pieces by flash floods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"615\" src=\"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/flood3-1024x615.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14907\" srcset=\"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/flood3-1024x615.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/flood3-300x180.jpg 300w, http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/flood3-768x461.jpg 768w, http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/flood3-600x360.jpg 600w, http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/flood3.jpg 1839w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Planes that were destroyed at Beira airport in Mozambique.  <br> Photo courtesy   standardmedia.co.ke   <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is the worst infrastructural damage we have ever had,&#8221; Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Joel Biggie Matiza said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The eastern district of Chimanimani was worst-hit, with houses and most of the region&#8217;s bridges washed away by flash floods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most affected areas are not yet accessible, and high winds and dense clouds have hampered military rescue helicopter flights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two pupils and a worker at a secondary school in the area were among those killed after a landslide sent a boulder crashing into their dormitory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soldiers on Sunday helped rescue the surviving nearly 200 pupils, teachers and staff who had been trapped at the school in Chimanimani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between &#8220;150 to 200 people&#8221; are missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The majority of them are thought to be government workers, whose housing complex was completely engulfed by raging waters.
