We shouldn’t feel the issue of Afghanistan (based on ideology), but instead, we should feel for the people.

“The people need peace and this whole transformation, which is now leading towards giving them peace. Hence, why wouldn’t we support them (the people) by giving them that peace they want? At least, there won’t be any interventions anymore.

“There’ll be no foreign countries in Afghanistan, (that can) have a big say on our internal affairs. I think this is the most important thing now. This is a new reality that needs acceptance by the global society,” Abdul Hai told Bernama in an interview via Whatsapp, yesterday.

He was asked to comment on recent developments happening in Afghanistan, as the Taliban swept across the country and toppled the Afghan government following the United States’ decision to withdraw its forces after a 20-year presence in the war-torn country.

Elaborating, Abdul Hai said all international communities including the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member countries could further extend their support by providing necessary aid and humanitarian assistance to help the Afghans.

“In this new reality of Afghanistan, what the OIC can do now is to call upon the international communities to help the Afghans, especially in supporting their economy to have a good future in developing a new state.

“What’s good for the public is to end the war, face and understand the new reality now, and let’s make a way out of it.

“Hence, why I’m asking everyone to focus on the Afghans. It shouldn’t be just wholly on the Taliban or the previous government but it is the matter of the people now who have struggled for such a long time,” he added.

In a statement made available to Bernama from its Jeddah-based headquarters, OIC, the Islamic world’s largest inter-governmental body, had called on Taliban and all Afghanistan parties to work towards advancing the interests of the Afghan people, protect lives, renounce violence and establish lasting peace in order to achieve the aspirations of the Afghan people.

The Taliban entered the capital, Kabul, on Sunday and took control of Afghanistan for the first time in almost 20 years. Following the Taliban’s capture of the Afghan capital, president Mohammad Ashraf Ghani left the country.

In the latest development, it was reported that Ghani, who had left the country to prevent “a flood of bloodshed”, is now in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

With the collapse of the previous government, the focus has turned to the safety of Afghan civilians and evacuees, along with the country’s future under the Taliban.

Many countries have decided to evacuate their diplomats and citizens from Afghanistan and close their embassies, according to media reports.

— NNN-BERNAMA

By Nabilah Saleh KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 (NNN-Bernama) — The world should focus on the interests of the people of Afghanistan who want to live in peace in the country without any foreign interventions, unlike for the past 20 years.
