That is up on last year&#8217;s figure of 4,105 for the same period but, it is still down on 2015 &#8211; the height of the migrant crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Sunday&#8217;s sudden surge has led populist politician Matteo Salvini to demand a meeting with the caretaker prime minister, Mario Draghi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;With millions of Italians in difficulty, we cannot think of thousands of illegal immigrants,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-53592852\">Salvini is currently awaiting trial<\/a>\u00a0in relation to blocking a rescue ship with more than 100 migrants on board from landing at Lampedusa in August 2019.
