{"id":121894,"date":"2021-05-08T14:49:03","date_gmt":"2021-05-08T06:49:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=121894"},"modified":"2021-05-08T14:49:05","modified_gmt":"2021-05-08T06:49:05","slug":"covid-19-who-backs-olympics-to-make-right-calls-on-virus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=121894","title":{"rendered":"Covid-19: WHO backs Olympics to make right calls on virus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/AR-210509699.jpgmaxh332maxw504.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/AR-210509699.jpgmaxh332maxw504.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>GENEVA, May 8 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; The WHO backed the International Olympic Committee, Japan and host city Tokyo to make the right choices in managing the Covid-19 risks surrounding the pandemic-postponed 2020 Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The World Health Organization said certain safety decisions regarding athletes, spectators and the Olympic village and venues could only be taken closer to the Games, which are due to open on July 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not whether we will have an Olympics or not \u2014 it\u2019s how those individual risks within that framework are being managed,\u201d WHO emergencies director Michael Ryan told a press conference in Geneva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UN health agency said it was down to the Japanese authorities to decide what level of public attendance could take place at Olympic events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Olympics organisers are yet to decide how many fans \u2014 if any \u2014 will be allowed at the Games, with overseas spectators already barred from attending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A virus state of emergency in Tokyo and other parts of Japan was extended on Friday, with restrictions also imposed in more regions as cases surge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have confidence that the International Olympic Committee, and the whole city of Tokyo, and the government of Japan will make the right decisions regarding how best to manage the risks,\u201d Ryan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe will leave it to the authorities in Japan, who are highly competent, to decide what level of attendance could occur in the Olympics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the authorities would have to create an environment of safety around the venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome of those decisions cannot be made until closer to the event, because it will depend on the epidemiologic situation at that time. So there\u2019s not a failing at all on behalf of the organisers that they haven\u2019t made certain decisions,\u201d said Ryan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is our hope that the Olympics can occur.
