{"id":12080,"date":"2019-03-05T10:23:03","date_gmt":"2019-03-05T02:23:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=12080"},"modified":"2019-03-05T10:23:05","modified_gmt":"2019-03-05T02:23:05","slug":"eus-barnier-to-meet-uk-brexit-negotiators-on-tuesday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=12080","title":{"rendered":"EU\u2019s Barnier to meet UK Brexit negotiators on Tuesday"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/n.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/n.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>BRUSSELS, March 5 (NNN-AGENCIES) \u2013 The EU\u2019s chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier will meet Britain\u2019s negotiating team on Tuesday, an EU spokesman said, as both sides seek a breakthrough in the thorny Irish border issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Barnier \u201cwill meet tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon\u201d with the UK attorney general Geoffrey Cox and Britain\u2019s Brexit minister Stephen Barclay, European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas told a regular news briefing on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The meeting, to take place in Brussels, comes after Barnier said on<br>Saturday that the European Union was ready to give Britain further guarantees to help push a troubled divorce deal through the British parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Barnier also suggested European leaders would be amenable to a short<br>\u201ctechnical\u201d delay in Britain\u2019s departure from the EU, scheduled for March 29, to give the British parliament time to formally ratify a final divorce deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The small overture to Britain has raised hopes that both sides can find a<br>solution, including to the so-called \u201cbackstop\u201d plan for the Irish border, a<br>major sticking point for many MPs in British parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017, Britain invoked Article 50 of EU law, triggering a two-year<br>countdown to Brexit that ends at 11pm (2300 GMT) on March 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The country is on course to leave without an agreement if British MPs fail<br>to approve a divorce deal struck by British Prime Minister Theresa May that<br>was overwhelmingly rejected in a first vote in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The embattled leader is now seeking changes to the pact which she hopes<br>will be enough to get it through parliament by March 12. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BRUSSELS, March 5 (NNN-AGENCIES) \u2013 The EU\u2019s chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier will meet Britain\u2019s negotiating team on Tuesday, an EU spokesman said, as both sides seek a breakthrough in the thorny Irish border issue.
