{"id":119585,"date":"2021-04-20T20:04:17","date_gmt":"2021-04-20T12:04:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=119585"},"modified":"2021-04-20T20:22:50","modified_gmt":"2021-04-20T12:22:50","slug":"chad-president-idriss-deby-dies-after-30-years-in-power-military-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=119585","title":{"rendered":"Chad President Idriss Deby dies while visiting troops in the frontlines, military says"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/chad-president-idriss-deby-dies-after-30-years-in-power-military-says\/a-57262804#\"><img src=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/57143135_303.jpg\" alt=\"Idriss Deby waves at supporters during a campaign rally\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>N&#8217;DJAMENA, April 20 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Chad&#8217;s President Idriss Debby has died while visiting troops on the front lines of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/us-orders-diplomats-to-leave-chad-as-rebels-near-capital\/a-57242438\">fight against northern rebels<\/a>, an army spokesman said on Tuesday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deby&#8217;s death comes&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/chad-president-deby-wins-reelection-extending-30-years-in-power\/a-57258862\">just one day after he was declared the winner<\/a>&nbsp;of a sixth term in office, marking over 30 years in power.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday, his campaign said he was headed to the northern part of the country&nbsp;to join troops in fighting &#8220;terrorists.&#8221; Rebels based in Libya had attacked a border post on Monday, and advanced hundreds of kilometers south across the desert, towards the capital N&#8217;Djamena. Following the clashes, Chad&#8217;s army said it had killed 300 rebels and quashed the offensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Army spokesman Azem Bermendao Agouna announced Deby&#8217;s&nbsp;death on state television and radio, surrounded by military officers he referred to as the National Council of Transition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;A call to dialogue and peace is launched to all Chadians in the country and abroad in order to continue to build Chad together,&#8221; said Agouna. &#8220;The National Council of Transition reassures the Chadian people that all measures have been taken to guarantee peace, security and the republican order.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The circumstances of Deby&#8217;s death could not immediately be independently confirmed due to the remote location of the battlefield.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deby, 68, began his 30-year rule of the country in 1990, and is one of Africa&#8217;s longest-serving leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On April 11, Deby won over 79% of the vote.
