{"id":119542,"date":"2021-04-20T14:51:57","date_gmt":"2021-04-20T06:51:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=119542"},"modified":"2021-04-20T14:51:59","modified_gmt":"2021-04-20T06:51:59","slug":"saudi-womens-activist-wins-top-europe-rights-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=119542","title":{"rendered":"Saudi women\u2019s activist wins top Europe rights award"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Saudi-womens-activist-wins-top-Europe-rights-award.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Saudi-womens-activist-wins-top-Europe-rights-award.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>STRASBOURG (France), April 20 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Saudi activist Loujain al-Hathloul was awarded a top European rights prize on Monday in recognition of her fight for women\u2019s rights in the kingdom, including her efforts to end a ban on women driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Vaclav Havel Human Rights Prize, named after the former Czech dissident and later president, is awarded annually for civil society action in defence of human rights by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hathloul \u201cis one of the leaders of the Saudi feminist movement, having campaigned to end the male guardianship system, as well as the Saudi ban on women driving, and for greater protection for women facing abuse in the Kingdom,\u201d PACE said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hathloul, 31, was detained in May 2018 with about a dozen other female activists \u2014 just weeks before the ban on women driving was lifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last December, a court handed Hathloul a prison term of five years and eight months on charges of terrorism-related crimes, but a partially suspended sentence \u2014 and time already served \u2014 led to her early release in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She remains on probation and is barred from leaving Saudi Arabia for five years. In March, she lost a court appeal against the sentence and the restrictions imposed against her, including the travel ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cInternational support is the only way we can expose the injustices in my country and protect the victims,\u201d her sister Lina said as she accepted the prize and its 60,000 euros ($72,000) at a virtual ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor years now, the Saudi regime has been trying to tarnish her image, to erase any support for her, and to make her forgotten.
