{"id":119198,"date":"2021-04-18T15:04:38","date_gmt":"2021-04-18T07:04:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=119198"},"modified":"2021-04-18T15:04:40","modified_gmt":"2021-04-18T07:04:40","slug":"us-shooting-minnesota-police-promise-not-to-detain-pepper-spray-journalists-covering-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=119198","title":{"rendered":"US shooting: Minnesota police promise not to detain, pepper-spray journalists covering protests"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/media2.malaymail.com\/uploads\/articles\/2021\/2021-04\/no-peace_20210418.jpg\" alt=\"Protesters chant \u2018No justice, No peace\u2019 in front of the Brooklyn Center Police Department, as protests continue after former police officer Kim Potter fatally shot Daunte Wright, in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, US, April 16, 2021. \u2014 Reuters pic\"\/><figcaption>Protesters chant \u2018No justice, No peace\u2019 in front of the Brooklyn Center Police Department, as protests continue after former police officer Kim Potter fatally shot Daunte Wright, in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>MINNEAPOLIS, April 18 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Minnesota police promised not to detain, threaten or rough up journalists covering protests over the police shooting of Daunte Wright, after officers detained and pepper-sprayed journalists on Friday night and forced some to lie face-down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Minnesota State Patrol also agreed to stop photographing journalists and their credentials and will no longer order reporters where they can position themselves to cover the demonstrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement came after state police and officers from eight other law-enforcement agencies in the joint force known as Operation Safety Net were criticized by media organizations for how they treated journalists at the protests in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota said the behavior of some officers \u201cwent beyond unlawful detention to include outright retaliatory assault\u201d against journalists, whose work to inform the public is protected against government interference by the US Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The events led several media organizations to ask Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to intervene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI convened a meeting today with media and law enforcement to determine a better path forward to protect the journalists covering civil unrest,\u201d Walz said on Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police impeded the work of journalists even after a US District Court judge on Friday issued a temporary restraining order that forbade them from arresting, threatening to arrest, or using physical force against journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFollowing feedback from media, and in light of a recent temporary restraining order (TRO) filed in federal court, MSP will not photograph journalists or their credentials,\u201d the Minnesota State Patrol statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn addition, MSP will no longer include messaging at the scene advising media where they can go to safely cover events. While journalists have been detained and released during enforcement actions after providing credentials, no journalists have been arrested,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also said journalists would be exempt from general dispersal orders issued to demonstrators, and that state police were banned from using chemical spray against the press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The protests erupted after Wright, a black man, was killed during a traffic stop on Sunday April 11 in Brooklyn Center.
