{"id":119153,"date":"2021-04-18T12:24:46","date_gmt":"2021-04-18T04:24:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=119153"},"modified":"2021-04-18T12:24:48","modified_gmt":"2021-04-18T04:24:48","slug":"us-china-commit-to-climate-cooperation-ahead-of-key-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=119153","title":{"rendered":"US, China commit to climate cooperation ahead of key summit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/AR-210419202.jpgNCS_modified20210418050942MaxW780imageVersion16by9.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/AR-210419202.jpgNCS_modified20210418050942MaxW780imageVersion16by9-696x392.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>WASHINGTON, April 18 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; The United States and China are \u201ccommitted to cooperating\u201d on the pressing issue of climate change, the two sides said Saturday, issuing the pledge days ahead of a key summit hosted by President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The joint statement came after a trip to Shanghai by US climate envoy John Kerry, the first official from Biden\u2019s administration to visit China, signaling hopes the two sides could work together on the global challenge despite sky-high tensions on multiple other fronts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe United States and China are committed to cooperating with each other and with other countries to tackle the climate crisis, which must be addressed with the seriousness and urgency that it demands,\u201d said the statement from Kerry and China\u2019s special envoy for climate change Xie Zhenhua.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It listed multiple avenues of climate cooperation between the United States and China, the world\u2019s top two economies which together account for nearly half of the greenhouse gas emissions responsible for climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It stressed \u201cenhancing their respective actions and cooperating in multilateral processes, including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both countries also \u201clook forward\u201d to a virtual climate summit of world leaders that Biden will host next week, though the statement did not say if Chinese President Xi Jinping would attend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden has made climate a top priority, turning the page from his predecessor Donald Trump, who was closely aligned with the fossil fuel industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US president has rejoined the 2015 Paris accord, which Kerry negotiated when he was secretary of state and committed nations to taking action to keep temperature rises at no more than two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the world badly off track to meeting the goal, Biden hopes his summit will result in stronger pledges in advance of UN-led climate talks in Glasgow at the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Saturday\u2019s statement, both Washington and Beijing \u201cintend to develop\u201d by the Glasgow meeting their respective long-term strategies to achieve carbon neutrality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other moves in the near term include boosting \u201cinternational investment and finance\u201d to support the transition to green energy in developing countries, as well as phasing out production and consumption of hydrofluorocarbons, gases used in refrigeration, air conditioners and aerosols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Longer-term actions that need to be taken in order to keep the temperature rise goals of the Paris accord \u201cwithin reach\u201d include reducing emissions from industry and power generation while stepping up renewable energy, clean transportation and climate resistant agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The apparent desire by the United States and China to cooperate on climate follows recent acrimony over accusations about China\u2019s policies in Hong Kong and its treatment of Uyghurs in its northwestern Xinjiang region \u2014 criticisms Beijing rejects as interference in its domestic affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the United States refuses to work with China on climate because of other disagreements, \u201cyou\u2019re just killing yourself,\u201d Kerry told CNN before his trip to Shanghai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Li Shuo, a policy advisor at Greenpeace East Asia, said the joint statement showed the \u201cunequivocal commitment\u201d of the United States and China in tackling climate change and should \u201cput global climate momentum back on high gear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is a firm step towards cooperation amid great geopolitical challenges,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe difficult meetings in Shanghai bore fruit.
