{"id":119148,"date":"2021-04-18T11:21:36","date_gmt":"2021-04-18T03:21:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=119148"},"modified":"2021-04-18T11:21:38","modified_gmt":"2021-04-18T03:21:38","slug":"czech-republic-expels-18-russian-embassy-staff-over-2014-blast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=119148","title":{"rendered":"Czech Republic expels 18 Russian Embassy staff over 2014 blast"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/czech-republic-expels-18-russian-embassy-staff-over-2014-blast\/a-57164366#\"><img src=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/57242066_303.jpg\" alt=\"Russian embassy in Prague\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">A policeman walks by a poster attached by protesters to a gate of the Russian Embassy in Prague<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PRAGUE, April 18 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; The Czech Republic is expelling\u00a018 Russian diplomats\u00a0over alleged links to an ammunition depot explosion in 2014,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/czech-nuclear-energy-ambitions-face-stiff-tests\/a-56793586\">Prime Minister Andrej Babis<\/a>\u00a0said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They have been given 48 hours to leave the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4>On October 16, 2014 there was a blast&nbsp;at a warehouse containing 58 tonnes of ammunition near the eastern Czech village of Vrbetice.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>It was followed months later by another big explosion at a nearby warehouse with 98 tonnes of ammunition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The explosion led to huge material damage and posed a serious threat to the lives of many local people, but above all it killed two citizens,&#8221; Babis said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Babis said Czech authorities had &#8220;clear evidence&#8221; linking GRU Russian intelligence agency officers from unit 29155 to the blasts, after receiving information&nbsp;on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The expelled Russians have all been identified as members of their country&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/why-are-russia-and-the-west-allowed-to-spy-on-each-other\/a-43170428\">SWR and GRU intelligence services.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Babis added: &#8220;The Czech Republic is a sovereign state and must adequately react.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Russia hit back at the accusations. The Interfax news agency cited Vladimir Dzhabarov, first deputy head of the upper house&#8217;s international affairs committee, as saying Prague&#8217;s claims were absurd and Russia&#8217;s response should be proportionate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the Czech organized crime squad (NCOZ) said it was looking for two men using Russian passports in relation to the explosions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The names in the passports are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/skripal-suspects-say-salisbury-trip-was-coincidence\/a-45476559\">Alexander Petrov, born in 1979, and Ruslan Boshirov<\/a>, born in 1978.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/czech-republic-expels-18-russian-embassy-staff-over-2014-blast\/a-57164366#\"><img src=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/45378315_401.jpg\" alt=\"suspects Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshiro\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Czech police are looking for two men traveling on Russian passports with the same names as the suspects in the attempted 2018 Skripal poisoning in the UK<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The names match those of\u00a0the two people\u00a0wanted in Britain over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/salisbury-what-we-know-a-year-after-the-skripal-poison-attack\/a-47757214\">the double poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter\u00a0in Salisbury in 2018.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The suspected GRU members are said to have been present in the Czech Republic for six days in mid-October 2014, visiting the region where the ammunition depot is located. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A policeman walks by a poster attached by protesters to a gate of the Russian Embassy in Prague PRAGUE, April 18 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; The Czech Republic is expelling\u00a018 Russian diplomats\u00a0over alleged links to an ammunition depot explosion in 2014,\u00a0Prime Minister Andrej Babis\u00a0said.
