{"id":118971,"date":"2021-04-17T11:11:38","date_gmt":"2021-04-17T03:11:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=118971"},"modified":"2021-04-17T11:11:41","modified_gmt":"2021-04-17T03:11:41","slug":"pres-biden-calls-for-us-russia-to-deescalate-soon-after-announcing-new-sanctions-against-russia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=118971","title":{"rendered":"Pres Biden calls for US, Russia \u2018to deescalate\u2019 soon after announcing new sanctions against Russia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Biden-says-for-US-Russia-now-is-the-time-to-deescalate.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Biden-says-for-US-Russia-now-is-the-time-to-deescalate.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>WASHINGTON, April 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; President Joe Biden said after announcing new sanctions against Russia that for both countries \u201cnow is the time to deescalate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden described the sanctions, which are aimed at the Russian economy and dozens of individuals, as a \u201cmeasured and proportionate\u201d response to Moscow\u2019s hostile actions against the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that during a phone call earlier this week he was \u201cclear with President Putin that we could have gone further\u201d but added that Washington is \u201cnot looking to kick off a cycle of escalation and conflict with Russia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden said that with direct communication between him and Vladimir Putin they could establish \u201ca more effective relationship\u201d and that the Kremlin leader \u201cagreed\u201d with this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden\u2019s proposed summit with Putin, which he said could take place \u201cthis summer in Europe,\u201d would be a chance to \u201claunch a strategic stability dialogue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Putin has not yet responded to the invitation but Biden said \u201cour teams are discussing that possibility right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden said there were \u201ccritical global challenges that require Russia and the United States to work together, including reining in nuclear threats from Iran and North Korea, ending this (coronavirus) pandemic globally, and meeting the existential crisis of climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden said he\u2019d challenged Putin on Russia\u2019s invasion of part of Ukraine and current massing of troops on another part of the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI affirmed US support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and I strongly urged him to refrain from any military action.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Biden was less clear about US policy over the almost complete Nordstream 2 pipeline which is due to funnel Russian natural gas to Germany, while bypassing the existing export route through Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a strong push in the United States to cripple the project with sanctions and prevent its completion, out of fear that it will give Moscow a dangerous grip on the energy supplies of US allies in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However Thursday\u2019s package of sanctions made no mention of Nordstream 2 and Biden, when asked by a reporter, said it was \u201ca complicated issue.\u201d &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON, April 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; President Joe Biden said after announcing new sanctions against Russia that for both countries \u201cnow is the time to deescalate.\u201d Biden described the sanctions, which are aimed at the Russian economy and dozens of individuals, as a \u201cmeasured and proportionate\u201d response to Moscow\u2019s hostile actions against the United States.
