{"id":118968,"date":"2021-04-17T10:52:11","date_gmt":"2021-04-17T02:52:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=118968"},"modified":"2021-04-17T10:52:13","modified_gmt":"2021-04-17T02:52:13","slug":"covid-19-covax-seeks-2-bn-donations-to-cover-vaccines-400m-raised-so-far","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=118968","title":{"rendered":"Covid-19: Covax seeks $2 bn donations to cover vaccines; $400m raised so far"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/1-36.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/1-36.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>GENEVA, April 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; The Covax scheme launched a push for an extra $2 billion in donations, saying it needed the money in advance to reserve Covid-19 vaccine doses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Covax facility ensures the 92 poorest participating economies can access coronavirus jabs, with the cost covered by donors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The United States co-hosted Thursday\u2019s donor event at which the first $400 million was raised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sweden led the way, putting in $258 million, with the Netherlands donating $47 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople everywhere should have access to rigorously tested, safe, and effective Covid-19 vaccines,\u201d said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs long as Covid is spreading and replicating anywhere, it poses a threat to people everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga will host a Covax funding summit focused on the 92 countries in June, it was announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe supply of vaccines and funding are still insufficient, and there is an urgent need to further strengthen the Covax facility to ensure equitable access to safe, effective, and quality-assured vaccines to people in developing countries,\u201d said Japan\u2019s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly 840 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines have been administered in at least 205 territories around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Covax has delivered more than 38 million doses so far to 113 participating territories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first shipment landed in Ghana on Feb 24, with Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo publicly taking the first shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Covax is co-led by the WHO, the Gavi vaccine alliance, and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scheme is aiming to distribute enough doses to vaccinate up to 27 percent of the population in the 92 poorest participating economies by the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have now secured up to 2.5 billion doses \u2026 and sight on another billion doses,\u201d said Gavi chief Seth Berkley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can put advance purchase agreements in place but to do those you have financing available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why the up-front money is critical.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sweden\u2019s donation made it the largest contributor relative to population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is an investment not only in global solidarity, but also in our common objective of putting an end to the pandemic,\u201d said International Development Minister Per Olsson Fridh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMinimising the risk of dangerous virus variants, enabling a quicker economic recovery and minimising the already devastating impact of Covid-19 is in everyone\u2019s best interest,\u201d he said. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GENEVA, April 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; The Covax scheme launched a push for an extra $2 billion in donations, saying it needed the money in advance to reserve Covid-19 vaccine doses.
