{"id":118952,"date":"2021-04-17T10:07:36","date_gmt":"2021-04-17T02:07:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=118952"},"modified":"2021-04-17T10:07:39","modified_gmt":"2021-04-17T02:07:39","slug":"covid-19-chinas-coronavac-80-effective-at-preventing-covid-deaths-chile-results","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=118952","title":{"rendered":"Covid-19: China\u2019s Coronavac 80% effective at preventing Covid deaths &#8211; Chile results"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/chinas-coronavac-80-effective-at-preventing-covid-19-deaths-ssy-chile-results.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/chinas-coronavac-80-effective-at-preventing-covid-19-deaths-ssy-chile-results-696x522.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>SANTIAGO, April 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; China\u2019s Coronavac vaccine was 67<br>percent effective at preventing symptomatic Covid-19 and 80 percent at<br>preventing death, according to real-life results unveiled Friday from<br>Chile\u2019s inoculation campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese figures should convey peace of mind to the country,\u201d Health<br>Minister Enrique Paris told journalists as he announced the outcome of<br>two months\u2019 of vaccination in Chile, in February and March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results were obtained from a comparison between people who were<br>fully vaccinated, partly vaccinated with one dose, and non-vaccinated<br>\u2014 a sample size of some 10.5 million in total \u2014 in the country that<br>has led the pack with its vaccine rollout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also showed the vaccine was 85 percent effective at preventing<br>hospitalization with serious coronavirus symptoms, and 89 percent at<br>preventing intensive care admissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chile\u2019s government wants to inoculate 80 percent or 15.2 million of<br>its population. It is far ahead in Latin America, and has one of the<br>most advanced vaccine campaigns in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of Friday, the country had succeeded in giving at least one<br>vaccine dose to 7.6 million people, and both doses to more than five<br>million \u2014 about a third of the target population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It kicked off its campaign on Christmas Eve last year with medical<br>personnel, followed by the wider population from February, starting<br>with older citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coronavac, produced by Chinese firm Sinovac, made up 86.9 percent of<br>Chile\u2019s vaccine arsenal, with the remainder receiving the<br>Pfizer\/BioNtech jab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of those who got it in February and March were over 60 years<br>old \u2014 the category of people most vulnerable to serious symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results were unveiled as Chile, as much of South America,<br>recorded a marked uptick in infections.
