{"id":118942,"date":"2021-04-17T09:14:35","date_gmt":"2021-04-17T01:14:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=118942"},"modified":"2021-04-17T09:14:37","modified_gmt":"2021-04-17T01:14:37","slug":"russia-to-close-parts-of-black-sea-for-six-months","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=118942","title":{"rendered":"Russia to close parts of Black Sea for six months"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/index-5.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/index-5.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>MOSCOW, April 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Russia will restrict the<br>navigation of foreign military and official ships in parts of the<br>Black Sea until October, a Russian news agency reported Friday, a move<br>that was swiftly condemned by Ukraine and the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tensions between Moscow and Kiev have escalated in recent weeks<br>following an uptick in fighting between Ukraine\u2019s army and pro-Russia<br>separatists in eastern Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Russia has massed its troops along Ukraine\u2019s northern and eastern<br>borders and on the Crimean peninsula, which Moscow annexed from<br>Ukraine in 2014. This week Russia also conducted navy drills in the<br>Black Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrom 21:00 on April 24 until 21:00 on October 31, passage through<br>the territorial sea of the Russian Federation for foreign military<br>ships and other state vessels will be halted,\u201d the state-run RIA<br>Novosti news agency cited a defence ministry statement as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The restrictions will affect the western tip of Crimea, the<br>peninsula\u2019s southern coastline from Sevastopol to Hurzuf, and a<br>\u201crectangle\u201d off the Kerch peninsula near the Opuksky Nature Reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A senior European Union official described the move as a \u201chighly<br>worrying development\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The move contradicts norms of free maritime passage and<br>international law and adds to tensions around \u201cthe military buildup on<br>the other side of the Russian border with Ukraine,\u201d the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The official added that the restrictions would increase tensions as<br>Russia was \u201ctaking unilateral measures on an international space\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the areas affected by Russia\u2019s restrictions is located near<br>the Kerch Strait, which connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov and<br>is of crucial importance for the export of grain and steel from<br>Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kerch Strait became a scene of confrontation in 2018 after<br>Russia seized three Ukrainian ships there over alleged violations of<br>its territorial waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ukraine had been free to navigate the Kerch Strait along with<br>Russia until 2014, when Moscow claimed full control of the waterway<br>after annexing Crimea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kerch Strait is also the site of a costly 19-kilometre<br>(12-mile) bridge connecting Crimea with mainland Russia that Moscow<br>opened in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s foreign ministry on Thursday slammed the navigation<br>restrictions, which were initially reported without specifics earlier<br>this week, as a \u201cusurpation of the sovereign rights of Ukraine\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also stressed that under the UN Convention on the Law of the<br>Sea, \u201cRussia must neither obstruct or halt transit through the<br>international strait to ports in the Sea of Azov\u201d. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MOSCOW, April 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Russia will restrict thenavigation of foreign military and official ships in parts of theBlack Sea until October, a Russian news agency reported Friday, a movethat was swiftly condemned by Ukraine and the EU.
