Was there a boycott yesterday? Was there a boycott today? Things are going on calmly, serenely and peacefully in a country at peace and stable. So, there is nothing to fear,&#8221; the President said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deby is a former rebel and career soldier who seized power in a coup in 1990.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After being voted in, he changed the constitution in 2018 to allow him to stay in power until 2033.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has maintained a firm grip on the military and state institutions to maintain power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chad has been a key ally in the West&#8217;s anti-jihadist campaign in the Sahel and Deby has campaigned on a platform promising security. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nOther than Deby, the five other candidates include Albert Pahimi Padacke, 55, a former prime minister under Deby, and Felix Nialbe Romadoumngar, 64, a newcomer to politics who is officially &#8220;leader of the opposition&#8221; as his URD party is the second largest in the National Assembly with eight seats, after 160 for Deby&#8217;s PDS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is also Lydie Beassemda, 54, the first woman to run for president in Chad&#8217;s history.\n\n&#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ballots are counted after the closing of the voting operations at a roadside voting station NDJAMENA, April 13 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; As Chad waits for the results of Sunday&#8217;s presidential election, the African Union said the vote was peaceful amid calls for a boycott by the opposition.
