{"id":117883,"date":"2021-04-09T09:27:12","date_gmt":"2021-04-09T01:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=117883"},"modified":"2021-04-09T09:27:14","modified_gmt":"2021-04-09T01:27:14","slug":"aid-flows-into-cyclone-struck-indonesia-as-death-toll-rises","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=117883","title":{"rendered":"Aid flows into cyclone-struck Indonesia as death toll rises"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/download-9.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/download-9.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>LEMBATA (Indonesia), April 9 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Two Indonesian navy ships packed with aid arrived in a cyclone-ravaged section of the archipelago, as the disaster\u2019s death toll rose to nearly 180 people, including dozens killed in neighbouring East Timor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vessels docked in hard-hit Lembata and Adonara island with hospital ships also en route to the ravaged cluster of islands in eastern Indonesia where thousands have been left homeless and dozens are still missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Torrential rains from Tropical Cyclone Seroja, one of the most destructive storms to hit the region in years, turned small communities into wastelands of mud and uprooted trees, sending thousands fleeing to shelters amid widespread power blackouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The storm on Sunday swept buildings in some villages down a mountainside and to the shore of the ocean on Lembata, where one of the aid ships arrived Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The navy vessels are packed with food, including rice and noodles, as well as blankets and other materials for some of the region\u2019s more than 20,000 evacuees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe two navy ships arrived Thursday,\u201d said Kompiang Aribawa, a regional naval base chief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnother ship will arrive later Thursday carrying military personnel who will be deployed to help people in the aftermath of the disaster,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A cargo plane left Jakarta for the disaster-struck region with about 100,000 face masks, virus test kits, as well as prepared food and blankets for survivors, Indonesia\u2019s disaster agency chief said earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least 140 people have been listed as dead in Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another 37 were killed in East Timor \u2014 a tiny half-island nation of 1.3 million sandwiched between Indonesia and Australia that is officially known as Timor-Leste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 70 people are still listed as missing, with disaster agency officials deploying sniffer dogs to search mountains of debris for bodies \u2014 and any survivors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rescuers have spent the past few days using diggers and shovels to extract mud-covered corpses from the debris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hospitals, bridges and thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed by the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities in both countries were also battling to avoid Covid-19 outbreaks in crammed evacuation shelters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fatal landslides and flash floods are common across the Indonesian archipelago during the rainy season, with deforestation often the cause, environmentalists say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The disaster agency has estimated that 125 million Indonesians \u2014 nearly half of the country\u2019s population \u2014 live in areas at risk of landslides. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LEMBATA (Indonesia), April 9 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Two Indonesian navy ships packed with aid arrived in a cyclone-ravaged section of the archipelago, as the disaster\u2019s death toll rose to nearly 180 people, including dozens killed in neighbouring East Timor.
