{"id":117584,"date":"2021-04-07T10:30:58","date_gmt":"2021-04-07T02:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=117584"},"modified":"2021-04-07T10:31:00","modified_gmt":"2021-04-07T02:31:00","slug":"three-way-talks-over-ethiopian-dam-fail-in-kinshasa-statements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=117584","title":{"rendered":"Three-way talks over Ethiopian dam fail in Kinshasa &#8211; Statements"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghanaweb.com\/GhanaHomePage\/africa\/Three-way-talks-over-Ethiopian-dam-fail-in-Kinshasa-Statements-1225468?gallery=1\"><img src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ghanaweb.com\/imagelib\/pics\/656\/65667631.295.jpg\" alt=\"Ethiopia's Grand Renaissance Dam\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><strong><em>Ethiopia&#8217;s Grand Renaissance Dam<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>KINSHASA, April 7 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Egypt and Sudan said that the latest round of talks with Ethiopia over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) in Kinshasa have ended with no progress made.<br><br>Delegations from the three countries were meeting in the Democratic Republic of Congo hoping to break a deadlock in negotiations over a project Ethiopia says is key to its economic development and power generation.<br><br>Egypt fears the dam will imperil its supplies of Nile water, while Sudan is concerned about the dam\u2019s safety and water flows through its own dams and water stations.<br><br>Before the meetings began, Egypt had said they represented the last chance to re-start negotiations before Ethiopia begins to fill the dam for the second year in a row after seasonal rains begin this summer.<br><br>Sudan\u2019s foreign minister Mariam al-Sadig al-Mahdi told reporters on Tuesday that Ethiopia\u2019s insistence on such unilateral moves represents a violation of international law.<br><br>\u201cThis Ethiopian intransigence requires Sudan to consider all possible options to protect its security and its citizens,\u201d the Sudanese irrigation and water resources ministry said in a statement.<br><br>Ethiopian water minister Seleshi Bekele did not respond to texts and calls seeking comment.<br><br>Sudan and Egypt were aligned on a proposal to include the European Union, United States and United Nations in the negotiations, as an addition to current African Union mediators.<br><br>Both countries said Ethiopia rejected the proposal during the meeting, as well as other suggestions to re-start negotiations.<br><br>\u201cThis position reveals once again Ethiopia\u2019s lack of political will to negotiate in good faith,\u201d Egyptian foreign ministry said in a statement.<br><br>Sudan, which is also locked in a border dispute with Ethiopia, had hosted Egypt for air force training exercises that concluded on Saturday.<br><br>Last week, Egypt\u2019s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said there would be \u201cinconceivable instability in the region\u201d if Egypt\u2019s water supply were affected by the dam.<br><br>\u201cWithout a new approach to negotiations, there becomes space for Ethiopia to impose a fait accompli and put all the peoples of the region in grave danger,\u201d said al-Mahdi. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ethiopia&#8217;s Grand Renaissance Dam KINSHASA, April 7 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Egypt and Sudan said that the latest round of talks with Ethiopia over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) in Kinshasa have ended with no progress made.
