{"id":117326,"date":"2021-04-05T11:39:13","date_gmt":"2021-04-05T03:39:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=117326"},"modified":"2021-04-05T11:39:15","modified_gmt":"2021-04-05T03:39:15","slug":"kosovo-parliament-elects-vjosa-osmani-as-new-national-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=117326","title":{"rendered":"Kosovo parliament elects Vjosa Osmani as new national president"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/dims4\/USNEWS\/4824107\/2147483647\/thumbnail\/640x420\/quality\/85\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fmedia.beam.usnews.com%2F7d%2Fffa004235ca2ed562d89d7c59fbf9e%2Ftag%3Areuters.com%2C2021%3Anewsml_LYNXMPEH330DX%3A12021-04-04T191224Z_1_LYNXMPEH330DX_RTROPTP_3_KOSOVO-PRESIDENT.JPG\" alt=\"Reuters\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">The newly elected Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PRISTINA, April 5 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Kosovo&#8217;s parliament has appointed a 38-year-old U.S.-educated female law professor and candidate of the ruling Vetevendosje party as the country&#8217;s new president, following an election in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vjosa Osmani took over as acting president of Kosovo last November when her predecessor, Hashim Thaci, resigned ahead of his impending war crimes trial in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Osmani&#8217;s initial mandate expired when the new government of Prime Minister Albin Kurti, the head of Vetevendosje, took over following the Feb 14 election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Sunday the 120-seat parliament voted in favour of appointing Osmani president by 71 votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opposition parties and civil society watchdogs have criticised her appointment, saying that having a president, prime minister and speaker of parliament all from the same party is not welcome in a country with a fragile democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Osmani represents a type of young Kosovar more familiar with life in the West and frustrated with the nepotism and ineffectiveness of the country&#8217;s traditional parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a speech, Osmani called for a dialogue aimed at normalising ties with Serbia, but said Belgrade must first apologise and prosecute those responsible for war crimes committed during the 1998-99 war that ultimately led to Kosovo becoming independent in 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Peace would be achieved only when we see remorse and an apology from Serbia and when we see justice for those who have suffered from their crimes,&#8221; Osmani said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until last September Osmani was a high ranking official of the Democratic League of Kosovo party, which she quit to join forces with Kurti. She is not a member of the anti-establishment Vetevendosje, but she ran on their list in the February elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is married and has two daughters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former President Thaci, a wartime hero who turned politician, is currently in the Hague awaiting trial before the Netherlands-based Kosovo&#8217;s war crimes court.
