{"id":117200,"date":"2021-04-04T15:17:36","date_gmt":"2021-04-04T07:17:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=117200"},"modified":"2021-04-04T15:17:38","modified_gmt":"2021-04-04T07:17:38","slug":"covid-19-france-reports-5273-people-in-intensive-care-units","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=117200","title":{"rendered":"Covid-19: France reports 5,273 people in intensive care units"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/assets.theedgemarkets.com\/France-medical-staff-PPE-patient-ICU-Covid-19-Cambrai%20hospital-April%201.2021pixbyPascalRossignol_20210404123613_reuters.jpg?ITB1a9qNpLPUC8jEmtfhd5SvXyCLN_NB\" alt=\"France reports further rise in Covid-19 intensive care patients\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>PARIS, April 4 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; France reported on Saturday that 5,273 people were in intensive care units for COVID-19, a rise of 19 from the previous day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That followed one of the biggest daily jumps in months on Friday, just as France enters a third national lockdown in an effort to stem the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Meanwhile, Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire said the French economy will expand by 5 per cent\u00a0in 2021 as a third lockdown to tackle the coronavirus pandemic has prompted a downward revision in the previous government forecast for 6 per cent\u00a0growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new forecast was prudent, Le Maire said in comments published on Sunday in Le Journal Du Dimanche (JDD).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our fundamentals are sound; we will be able to bounce back,&#8221; Le Maire said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>French schools and non-essential stores such as clothing chains will now be shut for four weeks, after COVID-19 cases surged in recent weeks, edging up the number of patients in intensive care units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bars and restaurants have already been closed for months, while tourist travel is at a standstill, although unlike when France entered its first national lockdown a year ago, construction work and manufacturing are among business areas still ticking over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many countries in Europe, France has ploughed billions of euros into propping up struggling companies with state-backed loans, help with rents and partial unemployment schemes.Advertisement<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest restrictions will force about 150,000 businesses to temporarily close, and aid measures in April will cost \u20ac11 billion, the finance ministry has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le Maire has repeatedly called for the European Union to accelerate the ratification and implementation of its \u20ac750 billion&nbsp;economic stimulus plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He told the JDD that France was now unlikely to get the \u20ac5 billion disbursement from that scheme in July as planned, due to delays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>France has its own 100 billion-euro economic reboot programme, and plans to spend roughly half of that budget by the end of the year, Le Maire said.\u00a0&#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PARIS, April 4 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; France reported on Saturday that 5,273 people were in intensive care units for COVID-19, a rise of 19 from the previous day.
