{"id":116916,"date":"2021-04-02T17:20:25","date_gmt":"2021-04-02T09:20:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=116916"},"modified":"2021-04-02T17:20:28","modified_gmt":"2021-04-02T09:20:28","slug":"taiwan-at-least-34-killed-after-train-derails-inside-tunnel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=116916","title":{"rendered":"Taiwan: At least 34 killed after train derails inside tunnel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.brudirect.com\/images\/news\/20210402_Asia1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>People in unaffected carriages walking along train tracks with their belongings<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u00a0TAIPEI, April 2 (NNN-AGENCIES)\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0<\/strong>At least 34 people have died after a train carrying some 350 passengers derailed Friday inside a tunnel in Taiwan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taiwan&#8217;s Central Emergency Operation centre says rescuers are struggling to access four carriages inside the tunnel that are &#8220;badly damaged&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 72 people are injured, said the transport ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The accident occurred at the start of the annual Tomb Sweeping festival, a typically high traffic period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pictures online showed people in unaffected carriages walking along train tracks with their belongings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It felt like there was a sudden violent jolt and I found myself falling to the floor,&#8221; an unidentified female survivor told Taiwan&#8217;s UDN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We broke the window to climb to the roof of the train to get out.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Taiwan&#8217;s President Tsai Ing-wen, a number of people still remain trapped inside the train.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Emergency rescue mechanisms have been put in place for the sick and injured. Rescuing those trapped is our highest priority now.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The eight-carriage train is believed to have derailed at around 09:00 local time (01:00 GMT). Local media reports say the accident occurred when a maintenance vehicle fell onto the path of the train.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of those on the train are believed to be tourists celebrating the Tomb Sweeping festival &#8211; a time when people visit the graves of friends and family, sprucing them up and making offerings to their spirits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People typically travel during this time to pay their respects to the dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fire department, said that up to 100 people were evacuated from four of the train&#8217;s carriages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Friday&#8217;s crash appears to be one of Taiwan&#8217;s worst accidents in decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last major train derailment in Taiwan was in 2018, which left 18 people dead.
