{"id":116913,"date":"2021-04-02T17:10:23","date_gmt":"2021-04-02T09:10:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=116913"},"modified":"2021-04-02T17:10:25","modified_gmt":"2021-04-02T09:10:25","slug":"us-couple-arrested-in-plan-to-join-daesh-in-yemen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=116913","title":{"rendered":"US couple arrested in plan to join Daesh in Yemen"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/US-couple-arrested-in-plan-to-join-IS-in-Yemen.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/US-couple-arrested-in-plan-to-join-IS-in-Yemen.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>WASHINGTON, April 2 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; A US couple was charged with<br>support for a terror group after trying to board a Yemen-bound ship to join<br>the Daesh group, the Justice Department said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>James Bradley, 20, of New York and Arwa Muthana, 29, from Alabama were<br>stopped  as they stepped onto the gangplank of a cargo ship in Newark, New Jersey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Justice Department said that Bradley had expressed violent extremist<br>views since at least 2019, and in contacts with an undercover law enforcement agency last year repeatedly said he believed in the Daesh group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also told the undercover agent he was willing to carry out an attack<br>against a US target, including possibly the US Military Academy at West<br>Point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bradley had already drawn the FBI\u2019s attention after a friend of his was<br>arrested in 2019 planning to travel to Afghanistan to join the Taliban,<br>according to a court filing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, Bradley \u201chas continued to express his desire to carry out<br>violence in support of radical Islamic ideology, directed his support and<br>allegiance to Daesh, and attempted to travel overseas to join and fight for<br>Daesh,\u201d the FBI said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bradley also shared Daesh propaganda with the undercover agent, and<br>they discussed his various options for joining extremist groups or launching<br>an attack in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately Bradley decided to head to Yemen to link up with the Daesh with Muthana, a woman he married in January 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf I don\u2019t find them I just keep going to Somalia,\u201d he told the agent,<br>referring to the East African country where the violent, Al-Qaeda-linked Al<br>Shabaab extremist group menaces the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The case demonstrated that jihadist groups still exert a pull on some<br>people in the United States, even after the Daesh was defeated by US<br>and allied troops in its home base in Iraq and Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe threat of terrorism at home and abroad remains,\u201d said Assistant<br>Attorney General John Demers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The department \u201cis committed to holding accountable those who would provide material support to foreign terrorist organizations,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both Bradley and Muthana face up to 20 years in prison on the charge of<br>conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON, April 2 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; A US couple was charged withsupport for a terror group after trying to board a Yemen-bound ship to jointhe Daesh group, the Justice Department said.
