{"id":116834,"date":"2021-04-02T10:19:51","date_gmt":"2021-04-02T02:19:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=116834"},"modified":"2021-04-02T10:19:54","modified_gmt":"2021-04-02T02:19:54","slug":"over-8000-mozambique-attack-survivors-find-refuge-un","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=116834","title":{"rendered":"Over 8,000 Mozambique attack survivors find refuge: UN"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Over-8000-Mozambique-attack-survivors-find-refuge.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Over-8000-Mozambique-attack-survivors-find-refuge.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>PEMBA (Mozambique), April 2 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; More than 8,100 people have reached safety outside the northern Mozambican town of Palma a week after it was besieged by militants, the UN said, as thousands others<br>remained stranded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Armed militants raided the coastal town on March 24, ransacking buildings<br>and beheading residents as thousands fled into surrounding forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dozens have been killed and many more are still missing in a coordinated<br>attack seen as the biggest escalation of an insurgency that has battered Cabo Delgado province since 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany more people remain displaced inside of Palma, including thousands who have reportedly gathered near the Afungi complex, where the security<br>situation remains volatile,\u201d the UN agency for humanitarian assistance OCHA said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Up to 10,000 are estimated to be around the Afungi peninsula gas site,<br>according to sources involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fighting had already displaced nearly 700,000 people in the gas-rich<br>province, more than 43,000 of which were staying in Palma before the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hundreds more were still seeking to leave Palma, while thousands were<br>making their way out by foot, boat and road, the UN said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Palma is around 10 kilometres away from a multi-billion-dollar<br>liquified natural gas (LNG) project led by French firm Total and involving<br>other international companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But President Filipe Nyusi downplayed the latest attack as<br>\u201cnot the biggest\u201d, despite its unprecedented proximity to Africa\u2019s single<br>biggest investment project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet us not lose focus, let us not be disturbed,\u201d Nyusi told reporters at<br>an event in the capital Maputo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The army said it had sent more troops to Palma in a bid to recapture the<br>town, with local TV showing soldiers deploying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are still disembarking troops. We have not declared the end of our<br>intervention,\u201d mission commander Chongo Vidigal said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regional bloc the Southern African Development Community (SADC) held<br>emergency talks in Harare to discuss the violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Total had already suspended operations and evacuated some staff in late<br>December after militants launched a series of raids near its compound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It had just announced plans to progressively resume work hours before the<br>militants attacked Palma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most displaced residents arrived at the LNG site on the Afungi peninsula<br>hungry, dehydrated and \u201cin shock\u201d after hiding in the bush for days,<br>according to Doctors Without Borders (MSF).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some bore life-threatening injuries, MSF emergency coordinator Sylvie<br>Kaczmarczyk said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have cared for one baby with a bullet wound,\u201d she said. Pregnant women were arriving in \u201cterrible condition\u201d, she added, while others clutched newly-born babies delivered in the bush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most vulnerable escapees, including unaccompanied and injured children, have been flown into the city by the UN. Nearly half of the 8,166 registered displaced are children, the UN said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hundreds of others used their own means, streaming into surrounding<br>districts on fishing boats, buses and on foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside the port of Pemba, residents with family in Palma anxiously scoured incoming survivors for familiar faces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They milled around the port\u2019s barbed-wire walls and sat against nearby<br>buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know if our relatives are on the boats that are coming or not,<br>but we are here, we are not losing hope,\u201d Muza Momadi said as she waited<br>for her mother and brother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe number of people displaced\u2026 will continue to increase over the<br>coming days,\u201d said the UN Refugee agency\u2019s Margarida Loureiro in Pemba,<br>adding some are reportedly trying to cross the border into Tanzania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far the \u201cflow of arrivals is constant but not massive,\u201d said an unnamed<br>aid agency official coordinating humanitarian assistance in Nandage and<br>Mueda, respectively over 50 and 150 kilometres from Palma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Helicopters carrying humanitarian personnel landed at Pemba airport,<br>alongside a small plane flying troops back from Palma. One soldier leaned on a stick as he limped barefoot across the tarmac, trouser leg rolled up above the knee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government has not yet disclosed military casualties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cabo Delgado\u2019s insurgents have wreaked havoc across the province in a bid to establish a caliphate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The insurgents are affiliated to the Daesh group, which claimed the<br>attack on Palma this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their bloody campaign has claimed at least 2,600 lives, half of them<br>civilians \u2014 a figure expected to rise significantly following the latest<br>assault. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PEMBA (Mozambique), April 2 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; More than 8,100 people have reached safety outside the northern Mozambican town of Palma a week after it was besieged by militants, the UN said, as thousands othersremained stranded.
