{"id":115793,"date":"2021-03-02T16:47:27","date_gmt":"2021-03-02T08:47:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=115793"},"modified":"2021-03-02T16:47:28","modified_gmt":"2021-03-02T08:47:28","slug":"nigeria-militants-attack-un-base-trapping-25-aid-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=115793","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria: Militants attack UN base, trapping 25 aid workers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/eeee.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/eeee.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>KANO (Nigeria), March 2 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Militants linked to the Daesh group have attacked a UN base and overrun a humanitarian hub in northeastern Nigeria, trapping 25 aid workers, security and humanitarian sources said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scores of Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters invaded the<br>town of Dikwa in restive Borno state, dislodging troops from the military<br>base and torching the humanitarian hub, a military source said Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have 25 staff sheltering in the bunker which is under siege by the<br>militants\u2026 but so far no staff has been affected,\u201d a humanitarian source<br>said, speaking on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Military reinforcements, including fighter jets and a helicopter gunship,<br>had been deployed to help repel the attackers, the military source said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A spokesman for UN chief Antonio Guterres confirmed only that there was a \u201csecurity incident\u201d, but gave no further details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more than a decade, Nigeria\u2019s military has battled an insurgency by the<br>Boko Haram group that has devastated the northeast, killing at least<br>36,000 people and displacing more than two million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ISWAP group split from Boko Haram in 2016 and has become a dominant threat in the region, attacking soldiers and bases while killing and kidnapping passengers at bogus checkpoints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The violence has spread into neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon,<br>prompting a regional military coalition to fight the militants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest attack comes after Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari replaced his four top military commanders after months of pressure over his government\u2019s failure to end the insurgency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest assault in Dikwa comes three years to the day after ISWAP<br>fighters attacked a UN humanitarian hub in the remote northeastern town of Rann, killing three aid staff and abducting a female worker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, ISWAP fighters in trucks fitted with machine guns raided Dikwa,<br>sending residents fleeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town, 90 kilometres from the Borno state capital Maiduguri,<br>is home to more than 130,000 people, including 75,000 who had already fled<br>from other parts of the region and were living in camps where they rely on<br>food handouts from aid organisations. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KANO (Nigeria), March 2 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Militants linked to the Daesh group have attacked a UN base and overrun a humanitarian hub in northeastern Nigeria, trapping 25 aid workers, security and humanitarian sources said.
