{"id":114677,"date":"2021-02-22T15:03:13","date_gmt":"2021-02-22T07:03:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=114677"},"modified":"2021-02-22T15:03:15","modified_gmt":"2021-02-22T07:03:15","slug":"israel-scrambles-to-clean-beaches-after-massive-tar-pollution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=114677","title":{"rendered":"Israel scrambles to clean beaches after massive tar pollution"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/1-90.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/1-90.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>MIKHMORET (Israel), Feb 22 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Israeli authorities warned people to keep away from the country\u2019s Mediterranean shore to avoid a<br>massive tar slick, as thousands of labourers and volunteers worked to clean<br>contaminated beaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Powerful winds and unusually high waves pummelled Israel\u2019s entire<br>Mediterranean coastline over Tuesday and Wednesday, with tonnes of tar<br>staining 160 kilometres of beaches along Israel\u2019s Mediterranean<br>coast from Gaza to Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ministries of interior, environmental protection and health urged<br>people to avoid \u201cthe beaches for bathing, sport and leisure, until further<br>notice\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cExposure to tar can risk the public\u2019s health,\u201d they said in a joint<br>statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tar, which killed many marine creatures, was apparently a result of<br>\u201cdozens to hundreds of tonnes\u201d of oil being unloaded from a ship, according<br>to the environmental protection ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A massive cleanup operation has been launched involving thousands of<br>volunteers and soldiers on loan from the army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a tour of a beach at the southern city of Ashdod, Prime Minister<br>Benjamin Netanyahu said the government would allocate funds on Monday to support the cleanup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visiting the beach alongside Netanyahu, Environmental Protection Minister<br>Gila Gamliel said cleaning the beaches would cost \u201ctens of millions of<br>shekels\u201d (millions of dollars).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also noted that Israel planned to sue those responsible \u2014 once they<br>are identified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need to look to the future. This event and similar ones around the<br>world show us how crucial it is to wean ourselves from these polluting fuels, and shift to renewable energy,\u201d Gamliel said in remarks relayed by<br>Netanyahu\u2019s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All but two of Israel\u2019s 100 or so public Mediterranean beaches were closed<br>for the winter, with the bathing season due to open on March 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to open the beaches on time,\u201d Gamliel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The storm not only washed up tar on Israel\u2019s Mediterranean shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the Nitzanim beach near the southern city of Ashkelon, the carcass of<br>an almost 17-metre (55 feet) male fin whale was discovered on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nature and Parks Authority had determined that the decayed state of<br>the whale indicated its death had been some two weeks ago, meaning it could not be related to the tar pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Sunday, Nature and Parks Authority workers used a tractor and a digger<br>to dig a huge grave in the sandy beach, into which the whale \u2014 of the<br>second-biggest mammal species in the world after the Blue Whale \u2014 was<br>pushed. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MIKHMORET (Israel), Feb 22 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Israeli authorities warned people to keep away from the country\u2019s Mediterranean shore to avoid amassive tar slick, as thousands of labourers and volunteers worked to cleancontaminated beaches.
