{"id":114532,"date":"2021-02-21T14:36:44","date_gmt":"2021-02-21T06:36:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=114532"},"modified":"2021-02-21T14:36:46","modified_gmt":"2021-02-21T06:36:46","slug":"covid-19-peru-suffering-medical-oxygen-crunch-amid-coronavirus-spike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=114532","title":{"rendered":"Covid-19: Peru suffering medical oxygen crunch amid coronavirus spike"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/s.france24.com\/media\/display\/51728e22-73df-11eb-b654-005056a98db9\/w:980\/p:16x9\/db0643ca3fbed5aca855bd618912dcefc39c780f.webp\" alt=\"People wait in long lines to get medical oxygen in San Juan de Lurigancho, near Lima, Peru\"\/><figcaption>People wait in long lines to get medical oxygen in San Juan de Lurigancho, near Lima<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>LIMA, Feb 21 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Hundreds of Peruvians waited in long lines to get medical oxygen for loved ones with COVID-19, amid a shortage of the gas in the pandemic&#8217;s second wave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In San Juan de Lurigancho, a largely poor area just northeast of the capital, more than 200 people waited in front of a new plant opened by the San Marcos parish and the municipality of Lima, which provides free medical oxygen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People had to show a medical order and a photocopy of the patient&#8217;s identity document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was tight police surveillance at the plant, as in almost all medical oxygen sales spots around the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first person in line had arrived Friday afternoon, sleeping on the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, local television showed a line of more than 70 vehicles &#8211; including cars, vans, trucks, minibuses and motorcycle taxis &#8211; on the side of a highway in the port city of Pisco, waiting to buy oxygen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the government, the demand for medical oxygen grew by 200 per cent in Peru with the second wave of COVID-19, which saw infections and deaths quadruple compared to rates in December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside the Criogas company in Callao, the neighboring port city of Lima, people line up for up to four days for a refill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Company owner Jose Luis Barsallo has established strict sales controls to cut out resellers and began refilling tanks only halfway to serve more people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With 33 million people, Peru has about 1.3 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 44,690 deaths, according to official data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the government has been rocked by charges against about 500 government officials &#8211; including former president Martin Vizcarra and top ministers &#8211; accused of getting vaccinated ahead of their turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police raided the health ministry and two university clinics on Friday as part of the investigation into what has been termed &#8220;Vacunagate&#8221;. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LIMA, Feb 21 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Hundreds of Peruvians waited in long lines to get medical oxygen for loved ones with COVID-19, amid a shortage of the gas in the pandemic&#8217;s second wave.
