KUCHING (Sarawak, Malaysia) Jan 7(NNN-Bernama) —\u00a0The Sarawak Health Department will first have a discussion with those selected to undergo the clinical trial for the COVID-19 vaccine from China, before obtaining their consent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
State Health Department director Dr Chin Zin Hing said those who have\n been selected would be contacted personally to be present at the \nSarawak General Hospital (SGH).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“After the clinical study specifications have been explained and the \nindividuals have given their consent to participate, only then will they\n be officially included in the clinical trial list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSGH is one of the nine research centres under the supervision of the\n Ministry of Health Malaysia (MoH) which has been selected to conduct \nthis international clinical trial,” he said in a statement here today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier, it was reported that the State Health Department was looking\n for 400 volunteers in the state to conduct a clinical trial for a \nCOVID-19 vaccine developed by the Institute of Medical Biology Chinese \nAcademy of Medical Sciences (IMBCAMS) in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr Chin said clinical trials are essential for the development of new\n medical treatments, including the COVID-19 vaccine developed by \nIMBCAMS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Malaysia is one of the countries selected by IMBCAMS to cooperate in\n the field of medical science during this pandemic and this clinical \ntrial involves 3,000 subjects,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this clinical trial, 50 per cent of the subjects will have the \nopportunity to be vaccinated while another 50 per cent are likely to be \ninjected with a placebo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The study protocol has been approved by the Medical Research and \nEthics Committee (MREC), MoH and will be conducted according to \nworld-class standards,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
