{"id":108205,"date":"2021-01-01T15:16:14","date_gmt":"2021-01-01T07:16:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=108205"},"modified":"2021-01-01T15:16:16","modified_gmt":"2021-01-01T07:16:16","slug":"update-daesh-claims-syria-bus-ambush-that-killed-37-soldiers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=108205","title":{"rendered":"Update: Daesh claims Syria bus ambush that killed 37 soldiers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/IS-claims-Syria-bus-ambush-that-killed-37-soldiers.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/IS-claims-Syria-bus-ambush-that-killed-37-soldiers.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>DAMASCUS, Jan 1 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; The Daesh group claimed<br>responsibility Thursday for an attack that killed nearly 40 soldiers in Syria<br>the day before when jihadists ambushed a bus in eastern Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>War monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Daesh<br>had attacked government soldiers as they travelled home for holidays in the<br>eastern province of Deir Ezzor, killing 37.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It said eight officers were among those killed while 12 other soldiers were<br>wounded in the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A statement by Daesh\u2019s propaganda arm Amaq said its fighters had \u201cambushed a bus transporting apostate Nusayri army elements,\u201d using a derogatory term for the Alawite sect to which President Bashar al-Assad belongs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vehicle was targeted \u201cwith heavy weapons\u201d and \u201cmultiple explosive<br>devices, which led to destroying the bus and killing nearly 40 elements and<br>wounding others\u201d, added the statement, according to SITE Intelligence, which monitors jihadist activities worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was one of the deadliest attacks since the fall of the Daesh (self-<br>proclaimed) caliphate\u201d last year, Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daesh overran large parts of Syria and Iraq and proclaimed a cross-border<br>\u201ccaliphate\u201d in 2014, before multiple offensives in the two countries led to<br>its territorial defeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group was overcome in Syria in March last year, but sleeper cells<br>continue to launch attacks namely in the vast desert that stretches from the<br>central province of Homs to Deir Ezzor and the border with Iraq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The official news agency SANA reported on Wednesday that a \u201cterrorist<br>attack\u201d on a bus killed \u201c25 citizens\u201d and wounded 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Observatory said two other buses which were part of the convoy managed to escape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The war in Syria has killed more than 387,000 people since it started in<br>2011, the Observatory says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dead include more than 130,500 pro-government fighters, among them<br>foreigners, as well as 117,000 civilians. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DAMASCUS, Jan 1 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; The Daesh group claimedresponsibility Thursday for an attack that killed nearly 40 soldiers in Syriathe day before when jihadists ambushed a bus in eastern Syria.
