{"id":107765,"date":"2020-12-29T09:54:00","date_gmt":"2020-12-29T01:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=107765"},"modified":"2020-12-29T09:54:02","modified_gmt":"2020-12-29T01:54:02","slug":"russia-17-fishermen-feared-dead-after-boat-sinks-in-barents-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=107765","title":{"rendered":"Russia: 17 fishermen feared dead after boat sinks in Barents Sea"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/3f1cb2a1-1cbd-450e-a565-dc2b098ee6c9_16x9_600x338.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/3f1cb2a1-1cbd-450e-a565-dc2b098ee6c9_16x9_600x338.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>MOSCOW, Dec 29 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Seventeen fishermen were missing and feared dead on Monday after a Russian boat capsized during a storm and sank in the freezing waters of the Barents Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officials said that two people had been rescued during a search-and-rescue<br>operation, but that bad weather conditions had complicated efforts to find<br>survivors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The privately-owned boat, called Onega, sank near the Novaya Zemlya<br>archipelago in the Barents Sea, with authorities becoming aware of the<br>accident at 7.30 am (0430 GMT), officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a result of the accident, 19 people ended up in the water,\u201d said the<br>Investigative Committee, which probes serious crimes, adding two people were rescued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A source told the Interfax news agency that there was little hope of<br>finding survivors due to strong winds and low temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDuring the sinking, temperatures were as low as 30 degrees (Celsius) below<br>zero,\u201d the source was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s practically impossible to hold out even with wet suits on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officials believe that ice had built up on the Russian-flagged vessel,<br>which had been operating since 1979. \u201cThe disaster struck during a strong<br>storm when the crew was hauling out a net with the catch,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople were literally swept off from the deck by the sea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trawler sank so fast that crew did not have time to activate their life<br>rafts, the source told Interfax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maritime accidents are fairly common in Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In April 2015, a Russian trawler sank in the Okhotsk Sea off Kamchatka. Of<br>the 132 people on board the Dalniy Vostok, just 63 were rescued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In December 2011, a drilling rig capsized and sank off Sakhalin Island<br>during a storm.
