{"id":107426,"date":"2020-12-25T16:12:09","date_gmt":"2020-12-25T08:12:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=107426"},"modified":"2020-12-25T16:12:11","modified_gmt":"2020-12-25T08:12:11","slug":"cuban-doctors-arrive-in-panama-to-fight-covid-19-amid-us-opposition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=107426","title":{"rendered":"Cuban doctors arrive in Panama to fight COVID-19 amid US opposition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/i.dawn.com\/primary\/2020\/12\/5fe54906232f7.jpg\" alt=\"Panama City: Cuban medical personnel arrive at Tocumen International Airport on  Thursday.\u2014AFP\"\/><figcaption>Panama City: Cuban medical personnel arrive at Tocumen International Airport <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>PANAMA CITY, Dec 25 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212;\u00a0A group of 220 Cuban health care professionals arrived in Panama on Thursday to help fight the coronavirus pandemic despite objections from the United States, Panama&#8217;s health ministry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cuban medics will &#8220;reinforce the health system in this fight against COVID-19,&#8221; the ministry said on Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Panama announced on Dec&nbsp;15 it would hire doctors from Cuba, the US, Mexico, Venezuela and Colombia to tackle the pandemic despite a law restricting medical practice to locals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Panama is the worst affected country in Central America with more than 220,000 COVID-19 cases and over 3,600 deaths among its 4.2 million population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the announcement had met resistance from Michael Kozak, Washington&#8217;s acting assistant secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Governments that hire Cuban medical workers must ensure their fair and humane treatment &#8211; in stark contrast to the Castro regime, which traffics in, and exploits, the workers&#8217; bravery for its own gains,&#8221; Kozak tweeted on Dec 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Make contracts transparent and pay workers directly.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US is Panama&#8217;s main political and economic ally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cuba&#8217;s practice of hiring out its world-renowned health care workers has been branded &#8220;white coat diplomacy&#8221; by Havana&#8217;s detractors, including Washington, which has accused Cuba of &#8220;forced labour&#8221; and using the medics as a propaganda tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our White Coat Heroes have arrived in Panama,&#8221; Cuba&#8217;s embassy in Panama said on Twitter alongside a video of people wearing white coats and carrying a Cuban flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since reopening its economy in September and October, Panama has witnessed a spike in coronavirus cases that has left its hospitals saturated and their staff exhausted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government has imposed a total lockdown over Christmas and the New Year to try to slow the virus&#8217;s spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Panama is due to receive 450,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine during the first quarter of 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Panama President Laurentino Cortizo had announced plans to hire Cuban doctors in August but backed down following criticism from Washington and from within the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the government was forced into a change of heart as it was unable to hire enough health care professionals to tackle the virus crisis. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PANAMA CITY, Dec 25 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212;\u00a0A group of 220 Cuban health care professionals arrived in Panama on Thursday to help fight the coronavirus pandemic despite objections from the United States, Panama&#8217;s health ministry said.
