{"id":107405,"date":"2020-12-25T15:25:52","date_gmt":"2020-12-25T07:25:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=107405"},"modified":"2020-12-25T15:27:16","modified_gmt":"2020-12-25T07:27:16","slug":"us-racism-police-killing-of-unarmed-black-man-ignites-fresh-outrage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=107405","title":{"rendered":"US shooting: Police killing of 2nd unarmed Black man in a month ignites fresh outrage"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/1-95.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/1-95.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>COLUMBUS, Dec 25 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; The fatal shooting of an unarmed Black man by police in Columbus, Ohio \u2014 the US city\u2019s second such killing this month \u2014 sparked a fresh wave of protests on Thursday against racial<br>injustice and police brutality in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andre Maurice Hill, 47, was in the garage of a house on Monday night when<br>he was shot several times by a police officer who had been called to the<br>scene for a minor incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seconds before the gunfire, bodycam footage shows Hill walking towards the policeman holding a cell phone in his left hand, while his other hand cannot be seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Columbus police chief Thomas Quinlan announced Thursday that he was moving to fire the officer, Adam Coy, on allegations of \u201ccritical misconduct\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have an officer who violated his oath to comply with the rules and<br>policies of the Columbus Division of Police,\u201d Quinlan said in a statement.<br>\u201cThis violation cost an innocent man his life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to local media reports, Coy had previously received complaints of<br>excessive force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coy and his colleague waited several minutes before approaching Hill, who<br>was still alive, but died later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hill, the second African-American killed by police in Columbus in less than<br>three weeks, was not carrying a weapon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Casey Goodson Jr, 23, was shot several times on December 4 while returning home. His family has said he was holding a sandwich which law enforcement mistook for a gun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several dozen protestors gathered Thursday, waving Black Lives Matter signs and calling for justice for people killed in police shootings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The killings in Columbus come after a summer in which the US was rocked by  historic protests against racial injustice and police brutality, sparked by<br>the May killing of African-American man George Floyd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Floyd, also unarmed, suffocated beneath the knee of a white police officer<br>in Minneapolis. Horrified passers-by filmed his death, with the footage<br>swiftly going viral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce again officers see a Black man and conclude that he\u2019s criminal and<br>dangerous,\u201d said lawyer Ben Crump, who defends several families of police<br>brutality victims including Floyd\u2019s, on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He denounced a \u201ctragic succession of officer-involved shootings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther said he was \u201coutraged\u201d by Hill\u2019s death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was \u201cknown to the residents of the home where his car was parked on the street,\u201d he said Wednesday at a press conference, describing him as a<br>\u201cguest\u2026 not an intruder.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ginther said he was \u201cvery disturbed\u201d that the two police officers did not<br>give first aid to Hill and called for Coy\u2019s \u201cimmediate termination.\u201d &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>COLUMBUS, Dec 25 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; The fatal shooting of an unarmed Black man by police in Columbus, Ohio \u2014 the US city\u2019s second such killing this month \u2014 sparked a fresh wave of protests on Thursday against racialinjustice and police brutality in the country.
