KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 4 (Bernama) — Twenty-eight Chinese\nnationals, including a woman, were detained in a raid under \u2018Ops Dadu\u2019 at two\nresidential units converted into call centres for illegal online gambling at\nChangkat Duta Kiara, Mount Kiara, Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Brickfields District Police chief ACP Anuar Omar said all of\nthem, aged 25 to 45, were detained by a police team from the Brickfields\nDistrict Police Headquarters\u2019 (DPH) Anti-Vice, Gambling and\nSecret Societies Division between 3 pm to 6.10 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said based on the intelligence gathered, the syndicate\nwas believed to have been in operation for the past two weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAll suspects do not have any legal travel documents and\nthey were brought to the Brickfields DPH for further action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn the raid, the police also confiscated various items\nincluding 22 laptops, 112 mobile phones, four modems, four access cards and six\nkeys,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said that the syndicate\u2019s modus operandi was to promote\nonline gambling through the WeChat application, targeting customers in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“During the raid, the foreigners\nconcerned could not speak English…so it was difficult to communicate\nwith them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that the police were conducting investigations to\nidentify the mastermind behind the syndicate, who is believed to be a local.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The case is being investigated under the Common Gaming\nHouses Act 1953 and the Immigration Act 1959\/1963.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
