KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1 (Bernama) — Malaysia is hosting the 7th\nInternational Energy Forum (IEF)-International Gas Union (IGU) Ministerial Gas\nForum on Dec 3 with the theme \u201cTowards Recovery and Shared Prosperity: Natural\nGas Opportunities for a Sustainable World\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The government will be represented by the Economic Planning\nUnit (EPU) in the Prime Minister’s Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The biennial event is jointly-organised by IEF and IGU and\nwould be held virtually for the first time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a statement Wednesday, EPU said Prime Minister Tan Sri\nMuhyiddin Yassin will inaugurate the roundtable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy)\nMustapa Mohamed will jointly moderate the ministerial forum with IGU president,\nProf Joe Kang and IEF secretary-general Joseph McMonigle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe forum will focus on inclusive dialogue highlighting the\nrole of natural gas to strengthen energy security and facilitating the orderly\nenergy transition in an increasingly carbon-constrained world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe two separate plenary sessions have been timed in such a\nway to encourage greater participation from 38 countries including Asia, North\nAmerica, South America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa,\u201d EPU said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, Mustapa said the forum would be addressing the\ngas industry\u2019s pressing issues amidst the current global pandemic and discuss\nmutually-beneficial solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Malaysia, he noted, is in the midst of rapid economic growth\nand gas is expected to play an important role in the economy in the coming\nyears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said Malaysia as the world\u2019s fifth largest exporter of\nliquefied natural gas and a key gas player in the region is well positioned to\nplay an active role in global gas advocacy and participate in charting its\nfuture direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe strategic discussion that will take place during the\nforum is also aimed at promoting greater engagement among the government and\nindustry players to shape the future of natural gas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs the environment surrounding the natural gas industry is\nbecoming more challenging, I look forward to a vibrant dialogue session among\npolicymakers and global natural gas players in developing ideas for both short\nterm economic recovery and long term energy transition,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
