KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 2 (Bernama) \u2013 Bernama editor-in-chief\nMokhtar Hussain has been promoted to chief executive officer of the Malaysian\nNational News Agency with immediate effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bernama chairman Senator Ras Adiba Radzi announced Mokhtar\u2019s\nappointment as the CEO after a meeting of the news agency\u2019s board of governors\nWednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mokhtar, 59, has been acting CEO since May 17, 2020,\nfollowing the resignation of Nurini Kassim a day earlier. He has been\neditor-in-chief since Aug 23 last year and deputy editor-in-chief (general\nnews) for six years prior to that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ras Adiba said she is confident that Mokhtar will be able to\nbring about a transformation to enable Bernama to shine not only in the ASEAN\nregion but also in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are fortunate that Mokhtar is a person with wide\nexperience, having served the organisation for 35 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is an achievement and honour for Bernama staff. We\nmust come forward and show everyone we are one, we have the experience, we have\nthe people and we can do it as well. This (appointment) is an inspiration for\nothers to rise and hold high portfolios,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She said among the challenges in driving Bernama forward is\ndrawing the younger generation to all Bernama platforms, besides diversifying\nthe social media content in disseminating information to society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mokhtar is a Bernama career journalist with 35 years of\nservice to his credit. He began his career in the news agency as a news\nexecutive in 1985 and has held various positions, including as Sabah bureau\nchief and news & current affairs manager (audio-visual service).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He holds a master\u2019s degree in Business Law from Universiti\nKebangsaan Malaysia and a bachelor\u2019s degree with honours in Jurisprudence from\nUniversiti Malaysia, as well as a bachelor\u2019s degree with honours in Mass\nCommunication from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mokhtar expressed gratitude for the trust and confidence\nplaced in him by the Bernama board as well as the Ministry of Communications\nand Multimedia in discharging his responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI am grateful for the huge responsibility of leading\nBernama. This is an honour for all Bernama staff. I will work closely with the\nnew chairman and all staff to take the national news agency to greater\nheights,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
