RAUB (Pahang, Malaysia) Dec 1 (Bernama) — The free\npneumococcal vaccination under the National Immunisation Programme for children\nbegins simultaneously Tuesday at the Ministry of Health (MOH) health\nclinics nationwide, which will benefit 500,000 children each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Minister Dr Adham Baba said children born on or after\nJan 1, 2020, are eligible for the pneumococcal conjugate\nvaccine (PCV) which would be given in three doses, the two primary doses\nat the age of four months and six months, and the PCV booster\nat 15 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the pneumococcal immunisation schedule would be\nadjusted for children whose vaccinations have been delayed by the COVID-19\npandemic this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe administration of the pneumococcal vaccine is the most\neffective method to prevent pneumococcal bacterial infection and indirectly\nreduce the resistance to antibiotics. This vaccine is also safe and effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe vaccination is vital and quite timely\nafter the number of cases of children with the pneumococcal disease\nincreased from 17,446 in 2017 to 19,773 last year,” he said after\nlaunching the National Pneumococcal Immunisation Programme for Children at a\nhealth clinic here, Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Also present were MOH disease control director Dr Norhayati\nRusli, state Works, Transportation and Health committee chairman Norol\nAzali Sulaiman and Pahang health director Dr Bahari Che Awang Ngah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The vaccine is intended to prevent bacterial infections of\nstreptococcus pneumoniae or pneumococcus, which can cause diseases such as\npneumonia, sinusitis, middle ear infection (otitis media), meningitis and\nbacterial infections in the blood (septicemia).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cComplications of pneumococcal disease include hearing\nimpairment, brain deformity and death. Children aged five and below are\nthe most at risk of becoming infected and experiencing complications of this\ndisease. Apart from reducing the rate of morbidity and mortality due to related\ndiseases, the vaccination can also reduce treatment costs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr Adham also said that the MOH always ensures that the\nvaccine used is effective and safe, but parents are urged to report the\nside effects of the vaccine, if any, to health personnel or through the website\nat npra.gov.my.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
MOH will also deploy the Orang Asli mobile team, mobile\nbus services, mobile boats and air doctor services to administer the\nvaccination to children in the rural areas, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
