KOTA BHARU (Kelantan, Malaysia) Dec 1 (Bernama) — A\ntotal of 249 smugglers were arrested by the Malaysian enforcement authorities\nas they attempted to sneak into the country along the Malaysia-Thailand border\nover the past 10 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kelantan police chief DCP Shafien Mamat said the suspected\nsmugglers comprised locals and foreigners who were picked up at several\nhotspot locations along the border, including in Pasir Mas, Rantau\nPanjang, and Tumpat districts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThose detained are believed to runners of smuggling\nsyndicates for rice, oil and flour, but there are also those involved in\nsmuggling of migrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey were nabbed by border enforcement agencies\nincluding the General Operations Forces (GOF), Malaysian Border Security Agency\n(AKSEM), the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) and the Marine Police\nForce,\u201d he said when contacted here Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Last year, authorities in the state detained 114\nsmugglers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a related development, Shafien said about RM15.8 million\nworth of smuggled goods were seized between January and October this\nyear, involving 995 cases, compared with the corresponding period\nlast year, with 537 cases and seizure of RM5.8 million of smuggled goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On illegal immigrants, Shafien said a total 1,767 foreigners\nwere picked up by enforcement agencies along the border areas\nin operations between January to October this year, from 3,246 people\nduring the corresponding period last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most of the illegal immigrants are from Thailand,\nBangladesh and Myanmar, he said, adding that they were sneaked into the country\nby \u201ctekong darat\u201d (smuggling agents).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe believe enforcement of the Movement Control Order (MCO)\nsince March, with the intensified checks, especially at the rat trails, is the\nreason for the drop in the arrest of illegal immigrants,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
