KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 (Bernama) —\nThe World Bank Group (WBG) office in Malaysia will function as a hub that\nbrings together local economic and financial experts, said Finance Minister\nTengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the hub would also allow\nWBG to conduct developmental research to improve global indicators including\nthrough the World Bank’s Doing Business Survey and provide technical support in\nselected fields, especially for low and middle-income countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis office will build on the\nexisting Malaysia-WBG collaboration in various fields for Malaysia to achieve a\ndeveloped and high-income nation status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFurthermore, the office will\nstrengthen the country’s commitment to South-South cooperation as well as the\nsharing of knowledge and experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWBG’s work programmes will focus on the core\neconomic areas where Malaysia has wide experience and expertise that can be\nshared with other developing countries in Asia,\u201d he said during the winding-up\ndebate on Budget 2021 at the committee stage in the Dewan Rakyat (lower house\nof Parliament) Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tengku Zafrul was replying to a\nquery from Ahmad Maslan (BN-Pontian) on the role of and benefits from the WBG\noffice in the nation’s capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The minister noted that an Oct\n29, 2012 Economic Council meeting recommended to have the WBG office in\nMalaysia, with the Finance Ministry (MoF) and Bank Negara Malaysia spearheading\nthe initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following the decision, MoF held\na series of meetings and discussions with the Prime Minister’s Department, Foreign\nMinistry, the Attorney General’s Chambers, Bank Negara Malaysia and relevant\nagencies, along with WBG representatives, to discuss in detail the\nestablishment of the office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
