JOHOR BAHRU (Johor, Malaysia) Nov\n30 (Bernama) — The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA)\nordered five merchant ships from various countries to leave as they were found\nto have anchored without permission in the waters of Tompok Utara, near Kota Tinggi,\nSaturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Johor Maritime director First\nAdmiral (Maritime) Nurul Hizam Zakaria said the ships\nregistered in Dominica, Indonesia, Palau, Panama and Liberia were evicted via\nan operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAn MMEA patrol vessel was\nassigned to expel the merchant ships, for not possessing\nvalid permission from the Marine Department to anchor in\nMalaysian waters,\u201d he said in a statement Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the waters of Tompok\nUtara has become a focus area for merchant ships to anchor since the Movement\nControl Order (MCO) was enforced in March, as most countries had\ntaken measures to restrict movement in and out of major ports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the situation caused\nmerchant ships to take the opportunity to anchor around Malaysian waters\nillegally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nurul Hizam said, during this\nmonth, they had evicted 23 merchant ships in the waters of Tompok Utara,\nwhile detaining about 17 other ships in the waters of eastern\nJohor throughout the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He reminded that the waters of\nPermatang Timur (Eastern Bank), Beting Ramunia (Ramunia Shoal) and Tompok Utara\n(North Patch) were within the Malaysian Maritime Zone and are not\ninternational waters, although they are at a distance of more than 12 nautical\nmiles from the nearest land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs such, all shipping activities\nin these areas must have permission from the Malaysian authorities,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
