KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 (Bernama) — The issue of crowded and confined accommodation of foreign workers needs to be tackled immediately to ensure that it does cause the spread of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases, said Malaysia’s Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said this was in line with the Workers\u2019 Minimum Standards\nof Housing and Amenities Act 1990 (Act 446).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSeeing how the issue of COVID-19 infection among foreign\nworkers has become an important matter that needs to be addressed, the Ministry\nof Health (MOH) urges employers to play a bigger role in jointly tackling it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs such, the MOH welcomes the enforcement action under Act\n446 by the Human Resources Ministry on employers who fail to comply with the\nprovisions of the Act,\u201d he said in a post on his official Facebook page Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said there were several factors which contributed to the\ntransmission of infectious diseases among workers, including places of\naccommodation, personal hygiene as well as the environment of the accommodation\nand workplaces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the MOH always took a serious view of incidents\nregarding the rise in COVID-19 transmissions in workplaces as manpower, be it\nforeign or local, is a valuable asset for any company or organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier in the afternoon, Dr Noor Hisham spent some\ntime to observe field activities for the Awan Baru Construction Site\nCluster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The cluster, involving the districts of Kepong and\nCheras in Kuala Lumpur, was declared Saturday after COVID-19 cases were\ndetected following the targeted screening of workers at a construction site in\nBandar Baru Sentul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said that as of 8 pm on Nov 28, a total of 482\nindividuals have been screened, with 410 (85.1 per cent) of them testing\npositive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Kepong Health Office carried out a risk assessment and\nclose contact detection at the construction site and areas around the workplace\non Nov 27. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe construction site was closed under Section 18 (1) (f)\nof the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342) on\nNov 27 for the purpose of cleaning and disinfection,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
