{"id":102316,"date":"2020-11-20T13:26:05","date_gmt":"2020-11-20T05:26:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=102316"},"modified":"2020-11-20T13:26:07","modified_gmt":"2020-11-20T05:26:07","slug":"covid-19-mexicos-deaths-surpass-100000","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/namnewsnetwork.org\/?p=102316","title":{"rendered":"Covid-19: Mexico\u2019s deaths surpass 100,000"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Mexicos-coronavirus-deaths-surpass-100000.jpg\"><img src=\"http:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Mexicos-coronavirus-deaths-surpass-100000.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>MEXICO CITY, Nov 20 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Mexico said its coronavirus<br>death toll had risen above 100,000, becoming the world\u2019s fourth country to<br>pass the grim milestone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday in Mexico we have 100,000 people who have lost their lives due to<br>Covid-19,\u201d deputy health minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell told a news conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The health ministry announced 576 more deaths in its daily update, taking<br>the total to 100,104, behind only the United States, Brazil and India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The overall number of infections registered now stands at 1,019,543 in the<br>nation of more than 128 million, up 4,472 from the previous day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the number of daily infections has begun to rise again in recent<br>weeks, the authorities say that deaths remain on a downtrend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are infections, but fortunately\u2026 there are fewer deaths and that\u2019s<br>the aim,\u201d President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Malaquias Lopez, an epidemiologist and former health ministry official,<br>said it was unclear if the situation was improving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re at a point where we don\u2019t see a clear phase of descent. We don\u2019t<br>know where it\u2019s going,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government says poor diets and health problems including obesity,<br>hypertension and diabetes are partly to blame for the high death toll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese conditions increase the possibility of a patient dying, it\u2019s true,<br>but in Mexico they\u2019re almost a death sentence,\u201d said Lopez, who thinks the<br>authorities have used the risk factors to deflect criticism of their handling<br>of the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Half of Mexico\u2019s workforce is in the informal sector and if they become<br>sick they cannot afford to self-isolate, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government says the high number of deaths reflects its large<br>population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, Mexico is in 11th place<br>worldwide, based on official data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The authorities acknowledge that the real number of coronavirus deaths is<br>higher than the official toll due to the low level of testing. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MEXICO CITY, Nov 20 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Mexico said its coronavirusdeath toll had risen above 100,000, becoming the world\u2019s fourth country topass the grim milestone. \u201cToday in Mexico we have 100,000 people who have lost their lives due toCovid-19,\u201d deputy health minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell told a news conference.
