BRASILIA, Nov 1 (NNN-Xinhua) — BRAZIL registered 407 deaths in the last 24 hours from the novel coronavirus, bringing the total number of deaths to 159,884, the Ministry of Health said.

Meanwhile, 18,947 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded, bringing the total to 5,535,605.

Brazil ranks currently second in the world in terms of deaths from COVID-19, behind the United States, and third in number of cases, following the United States and India.

According to a state-run research center, the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, 10 out of the 27 Brazilian state capitals have recently shown an upward trend in COVID-19 cases, seven of them with a sizable increase.

Sao Paulo, the largest city in the country and the epicenter of a nationwide outbreak, showed signs of increasing infections for the first time after having seen a decline in cases in recent weeks.

MEXICO: Mexico reported 6,151 new cases of COVID-19 with 464 additional fatalities over the past 24 hours, the health ministry said.

The country has so far reported a total of 924,962 cases with 91,753 deaths, said the ministry.

Due to the pandemic, Mexico, the second largest economy in Latin America after Brazil, is facing a historic economic decline of 9 percent for 2020, according to the International Monetary Fund.

CHILE: Elective surgeries have resumed as Covid-19 cases have decreased in the country, the Health Ministry’s undersecretary of assistance networks, Arturo Zuniga, said.

At a press conference, the official stated that in some areas, surgeons are already performing a greater number of surgeries than those performed during the same period of last year.

But he said that “it is totally understandable that citizens are afraid of going to the clinics, to hospitals, so as not to get coronavirus.”

He urged citizens to go to health centers when necessary, saying that “hospitals and clinics have taken biosecurity measures to minimize the possibility of contagion and it is important that people return for their checkups and all the medical care they need to maintain their health.”

The Ministry of Health reported on Saturday another 49 deaths and 1,686 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours.

These new figures brought the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 510,256 and the death toll from the disease to 14,207. — NNN-XINHUA
