TOKYO, Nov 1 (NNN-NHK) – The confirmed COVID-19 cases in Japan increased by 876 to reach 101,453 as of last night, according to the latest figures from the health ministry and local authorities.

The figure excludes the 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship, that was quarantined in Yokohama, earlier in the year.

The death toll in Japan from the pandemic currently stands at 1,783, with 14 new fatalities reported Saturday. The death toll includes 13 from the Diamond Princess cruise ship.

The health ministry also said there are currently 161 patients considered severely ill, with the aid of ventilators, or in intensive care.

In Tokyo, the epicentre of Japan’s outbreak, 215 new cases were reported on Saturday, with the capital’s cumulative total reaching 31,096, the highest among the country’s 47 prefectures.

With experts warning of another wave of COVID-19 infections hitting the capital, Gov. Yuriko Koike said on Friday that, Tokyo’s testing capacity will be increased to about 65,000 per day by early Dec, which is part of preparations for the twin-threat of the COVID-19 pandemic and seasonal influenza.– NNN-NHK
