TEHRAN, Oct 28 (NNN-TASNIM) – The chief commander of Iran’s army, said yesterday that, Iran has bolstered its air defence, near the north-western border, amid the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
The move is aimed at safeguarding the security of Iran’s borders, Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi was quoted by the state TV as saying.
On Monday, Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), deployed forces to Iran’s East Azerbaijan province, near its border with the Nagorno-Karabakh region, amid the insecurity created by the clashes between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have been at loggerheads over the mountainous region since 1988, and a new round of armed conflict broke out on Sept 27, along the contact line.
On Monday, a ceasefire agreement went into effect between Armenia and Azerbaijan, but it was broken shortly after, as the two sides traded accusations.– NNN-TASNIM
