MIRI, Oct 27 (NNN-BERNAMA) – A Malaysian ship, with 187 crew members on board, suffered an emergency in stormy weather, off the country’s state of Sarawak, leaving one dead, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), the country’s coast guard, said a few moments ago.
The ship, Dayang Topaz, is believed to have hit an oil platform, after one of its anchors broke during bad weather, some 7.7 nautical miles from shore, MMEA director-general, Mohd Zubil Mat Som, said.
“The sea conditions are bad with waves as high as 3.5 to four metres,” he said, adding that, three coastguard vessels are in the area to conduct search and rescue operation.
A total of 125 crews jumped into the sea, 124 of whom were rescued, with one injured, but one died.
MMEA also said efforts are underway to save 62 crew members, who are still on board the vessel, with help from the Malaysian Air Force, and assistance from Brunei and oil companies operating in the area.– NNN-BERNAMA
