UNITED NATIONS, Oct 27 (NNN-Xinhua) — United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the stakeholders in Tanzania to ensure peaceful and inclusive participation in the upcoming elections.
“As Tanzanians prepare to take part in the general elections scheduled for Oct. 28, the secretary-general calls on all national stakeholders to ensure that the polls are conducted in an inclusive and peaceful manner,” according to a statement issued by the UN chief’s office.
“In this regard, the secretary-general recalls that an inclusive electoral process and a broad, effective participation of political parties and their candidates, particularly women, remain essential for safeguarding the progress made by the United Republic of Tanzania in consolidating stability, democracy and sustainable development,” said the statement.
“The secretary-general urges all political leaders and their supporters to participate in this exercise peacefully and refrain from violence. He further calls on the authorities to provide a safe and secure environment, which will allow Tanzanians to exercise their civil and political rights,” it said.
“The secretary-general reiterates the commitment of the United Nations to support the country’s efforts to promote sustainable development and build a prosperous future,” it noted.
More than 29 million eligible voters in Tanzanian will choose a president, members of Parliament and councilors on Wednesday in the next general elections.
Incumbent president John Pombe Magufuli, who took office in November 2015, is seeking re-election for a second and final five-year term. He is facing competition from 14 other presidential candidates. — NNN-XINHUA
