MUMBAI, Oct 13 (NNN-UNI) – Mumbai initiated a mass drive to penalise some 20,000 citizens per day, for not wearing masks in public, said an official of the Indian city’s governing body, on Monday.
The city civic body resolved to continue the drive on a daily basis, at least for the next one month, said I.S. Chahal, commissioner of BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
“It is extremely important and vital to submit here that, a large number of citizens in the city do not wear face masks, and this can lead to situation getting difficult in the future, thereby delaying further opening up of Mumbai,” Chahal said.
So far, BMC has fined around 14,000 people in Mumbai for not wearing masks in public between Apr 1 and Sept 26.
Mumbai, the financial capital of India, is the third worst affected Indian city by COVID-19 after Delhi and Bengaluru, with over 229,446 cases of COVID-19, of which 25,767 were active cases and over 9,433 deaths were reported so far.
On Sunday, Uddhav Thackeray, chief minister of India’s western state of Maharashtra, of which Mumbai is its political capital, expressed concern over people either not wearing masks or not wearing them properly.– NNN-UNI
