OTTAWA, Oct 8 (NNN-AGENCIES) – Canada’s daily case counts continue to increase steeply, with an average of 2,052 new cases being reported daily during the most recent seven days, said Theresa Tam, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer on Wednesday.
That represents an increase of 40 percent from the previous week.
Canada is also seeing an upward trend in the number of COVID-19 patients being hospitalised.
Over the past week, there have been an average of 644 COVID-19 cases in hospital on any given day and 18 deaths reported daily, Tam said.
Tam added that the increasing number and variety of COVID-19 tests available in Canada is a good step but that testing cannot replace basic health measures like physical distancing and wearing face masks.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Canada had 173,008 cases of COVID-19, including 9,541 deaths, according to CTV.
Yesterday, Quebec province reported 900 new cases and 17 more deaths, while Ontario reported another 583 cases and Ottawa added 117 new cases, the second-highest one-day spike for the country’s capital city, since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A total of 222 Canadian service members have contracted COVID-19 since the pandemic began in the country. No military member died from the illness, according to CTV.– NNN-AGENCIES
