Covid-19: Nigeria schools to reopen in a week’s time as hundreds of Namibian students test positive after schools reopen
Namibia has confirmed 11,373 coronavirus cases

ABUJA/WINDHOEK, Oct 3 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The Nigerian government has ordered the reopening of all schools in the country.

Education Minister Adamu Adamu made the announcement on Friday morning.

The minister’s spokesperson Bem Goong said that post-primary schools owned by the federal government – locally known as unity schools – would reopen on Oct 12.

State and private schools will determine their own modalities of reopening, according to Goong.

He said the bodies regulating the various tertiary institutions including universities, colleges and polytechnic in the country will come up with their own resumption schedules after putting in place structures for adherence to the Covid-19 guidelines.

Some states reopened primary and secondary schools last month.

Meanwhile in WINDHOEK, more than 300 students in Namibia have caught coronavirus since schools reopened.

The ministry of health says most cases are in boarding schools.

Health Minister Kalumbi Shangula said safety guidelines should be followed to stop transmissions in closed areas like schools.

Local media reported a coronavirus outbreak in one of the schools in Oshikoto region, which has the highest number of confirmed cases.

Namibia closed schools in March because of the pandemic and reopened them in June. The authorities cited absence of local transmissions.

All teachers and students were to wear masks at all times to prevent the spread of the virus. Schools administrators were also to ensure high hygiene levels.

Namibia has so far confirmed 11,373 coronavirus cases with 123 deaths. — NNN-AGENCIES
