5.2-Magnitude Quake Rattles Southern Philippines

MANILA, Oct 1 (NNN-PNA) – An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.2 shook Surigao Del Sur province, in the southern Philippines today, the Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology (Phivolcs) said.

The institute said, the offshore quake, which struck at 6:10 a.m. local time, hit at a depth of 16 kilometres, about 68 kilometres northeast of Bayabas town.

The tremor was also felt in Surigao City in Surigao Del Norte province, the institute added.

The institute said, the quake, which was tectonic in origin, will trigger aftershocks but will not cause damage.

The Philippines has frequent seismic activity due to its location along the Pacific “Ring of Fire.”– NNN-PNA
