SAO PAULO, Feb 19 (NNN-EFE) — Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro confirmed the government’s intention to privatize 12 airports this March 15, and said the measure will take in some 3,500 reais (some $945 million), to be reinvested in the air terminals sold at auction.
On his Twitter account, his main method of communication, Bolsonaro said that all the bidding for those airports will be carried out in line with a note published last Friday by the Infrastructure Ministry’s Program of Investment Associations (PPI).
“Quality in this specific service, employment and economy. These are just the first steps in this area!” the president tweeted.
According to the announcement by the Infrastructure Ministry, bidding on the 12 airports will take place next March 15, though the “the government has hopes” of making a total of 23 privatizations “during the first 100 days of President Bolsonaro’s administration.”
The airport concessions will be knocked down in three major blocs, for which the minimum total bidding for the 12 terminals will be 219 million reais ($59.12 million), to be paid immediately.
Throughout the concession period of 30 years, the ministry expects their total value to reach some 2.1 billion reais (some $566.9 million).
The northeastern bloc is composed of airports at Recife, Maceio, Aracaju, Juazeiro do Norte, Joao Pessoa and Campina Grande, and the minimum bid for the concession will be 171 million reais (some $46.16 million).
In Brazil’s southeastern region, the airports of Vitoria and Macae will be auctioned off with a minimum starting bid of 47 million reais ($12.7 million).
Finally, the airports of Cuiaba, Sinop, Rondonopolis and Alta Floresta make up the central-western bloc and the initial bid will be 800,000 reais ($216,000).
With the privatization of the 12 airports, the government hopes to collect some 3.5 billion reais (some $945 million), which will be reinvested “in the terminals,” Bolsonaro said. — NNN-EFE
