Haiti capital slowly returning to normal after protests

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Feb 19 (NNN-PRENSA LATINA) — Eleven days after the strong protests that shook Haiti, this capital is slowly returning to normal, after the government on Monday called on the population to resume normal activities.

Although some streets barricades were reported very early in the southern part of Port-au-Prince, vehicle traffic is progressively increasing, and the main banks branches are providing services.

Collective transportation is also retaken, and public administration offices open their doors, after the government’s request to regularise normal office hours.

Gas stations, propane stations, small businesses and shopping malls opened to the public on Monday, after the government assured that the police and other institutions in charge of security, will accompany the return to normal life.

According to the government, schools, universities, commercial and industrial companies, as well as the public administration will operate in their usual hours.

Port-au-Prince and other Haitian cities have been partially paralysed since Feb 7 by protests denouncing the high cost of living, corruption and calling for President Jovenel Moise´s resignation. — NNN-PRENSA LATINA
